Children's Programs

Nursery Care

Parents or grandparents can opt for nursery care for babies and toddlers during the 10:00 am Sunday service and during many special events such as festival services or concerts.  But babies are always welcome either in church or in the nursery.

Kairos Sundays

4th Sunday of each Month (beginning October 26th)

Provides the opportunity for folks of all ages to come together to learn something new, to learn from one another, and to have fun. Everyone meets at 9:30 am for a half-hour of formation around topics such as: “What’s going on at the altar?”, “Why do we sing the psalms?”, “What does ‘Being Christian’ have to do with recycling?”, and more. Immediately following this half-hour, we gather for worship at 10:00 am—with worshippers of all ages taking on various roles in our liturgy. [Kairos: Greek: the suitable time, the right moment, God’s appointed time]

Godly Play

The Godly Play program, a Montessori based curriculum, has been offered to the younger children at St. Mark’s since September 1996. In the Godly play setting, the room is open, carefully organized, and the materials are easily accessible. The children enter into and experience the sacred stories, parables, and liturgical actions. The stories are told to the circle of children with easily manipulated figures and materials. In a playful way, the children are invited to wonder about the story, themselves, and God, then respond to the lesson. Our year-round program continues with a new theme each year for the summer classes.

The children also enjoy working in the community garden, the Garden of Eatin’, located on the church property. They learn to dig, plant, care for plants, harvest, prepare some of the food, and share the produce. This rewarding experience makes them good stewards in caring for God’s gifts in the garden---the plants and the animals that visit. The garden also provides an outdoor classroom for presenting lessons several times during the year.

Throughout the year, the children also make cards for shut-ins, decorate welcome bags for newcomers, and at Christmas, they decorate holiday bags for the residents of Loving Care home. Their drawings are printed in some of the bulletins and in Markings, the weekly email news. At the Christmas party, the children decorate the tree and sing Christmas carols.

The Godly Play class is from 9:30 – 10:30 AM each Sunday; children join the 10:00 service at the passing of the Peace. The class is open to children from three through seven years old.

Awesome People

Each Sunday from 9:30 to 10:30 AM, children 8 to 10 participate in Awesome People. Children and their parents were involved in naming and designing this program. Featuring a  lectionary-based curriculum, the children also have  ample opportunities for creative expression and fun! Adults from the parish work with the program as mentors allowing these awesome people to make friends across generations. Youth join the 10:00 service at the passing of the Peace.
