Serving in Worship

At St. Mark’s everyone is encouraged to join in singing, praying, listening and receiving communion.   If you would like to become more involved in the worship service, we have many different types of opportunities. If any of these ministries spark your interest, use the Contact page to find out more or to volunteer.

Altar Guild & Holy Bread Bakers

Altar Guild members prepare the church for the various services, as well as regular Sunday worship.  This includes maintaining the sacred vessels, linens, bread and other elements used in our services.   We also have “Holy Bread Bakers” who lend their baking talent and provide our Eucharistic bread.

Greeters

Greeters are St. Mark’s ambassadors and the first impression visitors get of our church.  They stand at the church door and encourage our guests to feel relaxed and at home.  They encourage visitors to sign our guest book, distribute welcome bags, and try to provide helpful directions and answers to questions.

Ushers

Ushers distribute programs, pass offering plates and guide communicants to the altar for receiving Holy Communion.  However, their primary responsibility is greeting everyone and extending a “St. Mark’s welcome” as well as standing ready to assist anyone in church who might have a special need.

Acolytes

Acolytes of all ages serve in worship by lighting the candles before church, carrying the processional cross and torches, and assisting the priest around the altar during the service.

Eucharistic Ministers

Lay Eucharistic Ministers assist the priest during commuion offering the the chalice to people taking communion.

Lectors

Lectors, who are also called readers, lead worship by conducting the Prayers of the People and by reading the lessons on Sundays and special holy days.  A lector usually enjoys public speaking and takes time to study and familiarize themselves with the lessons and the prayers before leading the congregation in the same.
